상상하는 동물.
먹을 것, 입을 것, 탈 것, 즐길 것 등 우리 삶을 구성하고 있는 대부분의 것들은 상상의 결과물이다.
이렇듯 인간의 가장 특징적인 활동인 상상은 이미지의 발현을 통해 구체적으로 드러난다. 아마도 상상 활동의 최종 결과물 중 하나인 이미지를 만드는 근본적인 힘을 주로 사용하며 살아가는 이들은 ‘예술가들’ 일 것이다. 그리고 이 예술가들은 그들의 삶이 지속되는 한 상상하는 것을 멈추지 않을 것이다.
이와같이 삶의 도처에 깔려있는 ‘상상’의 표현들에 주목하여 우리 갤러리는 전시 상상・상상 想像・常常 (이하 상상)을 개최한다.
상상 전시에서 우리 갤러리가 소개하는 작가는 회화의 요시무라 무네히로와 한충석 그리고 조각의 마츠모토 다카히로이다.
일본의 화가인 요시무라 무네히로는 현실과 초현실 사이의 공간과 인물을 그리는 것으로 상상의 세계를 완벽하게 보여준다. 현실에 존재하듯 하지 않는 듯 익숙하고도 낯선 이미지들은 현실과 상상의 중간인 ‘사이-세계’를 나타낸다. 1961년생의 중견의 작가가 그리는 이 중간 세계는 가스통 바슐라르가 이야기 한 상상의 세계에서 우리가 개발 해 나가야 한다고 한 새로운 사유의 영역을 잘 보여준다.
한충석은 동물과 인물을 그만의 스타일로 그려내는 것을 통해 작가의 사고를 전달한다. 생명이 가지는 기본적인 방어기제를 작가의 상상 표현으로 인간 그리고 인간과 가까운 동물로서 그려낸다. 작가의 작품을 독특하게 만드는 광목천에 물감을 스미듯 채색하는 기법은 작가의 상상력과 많은 실험 끝에 나타난 결과물이다.
마츠모토 다카히로는 나무를 조각하여 살아움직일 듯 생생한 인간의 얼굴에 단순화 되거나 켄타로우스를 연상시키듯 기괴한 신체에 금박을 입히는 것으로 신화적 상상의 존재를 만들어 낸다. 상상으로 부터 시작되어 작가의 손 끝에서 탄생한 다카히로의 작품은 상상의 결과물이 우리가 자라오면서 경험한 환경 또는 신화등 교육받은 내용을 바탕으로 드러나는 경우가 많은 것임을 드러냄과동시에 상상활동이 주는 즐거움와 신비함을 느낄 수 있다.
현재를 살고있는 우리는 과거 누군가의 상상의 결과물들을 향유하고 누리며 그 속에서 살아가고 있다.
세 명의 작가가 가진 철학을 각자의 철학을 고유한 상상으로 풀어낸 이 전시로부터 상상이 인간에게 주는 이야기와 감정을 탐구하고 새로운 세계를 탐험하는 기쁨과 상상을 이어나가는 즐거움을 가져갈 수 있기를 바래본다.
Imagining Animals
Most of what constitutes our lives—what we eat, wear, ride, and enjoy—are products of imagination. Human beings, through their most characteristic activity of imagining, manifest images concretely. Those who primarily utilize the fundamental power of creating images, arguably one of the final outcomes of imaginative activity, are likely to be called 'artists.' And these artists will continue to imagine as long as their lives endure.
With attention to the expressions of 'imagination' spread throughout life, our gallery is hosting an exhibition titled 'Imagination.' In this exhibition, our gallery introduces the painters Yoshimura Munehiro and Han Choong-seok, as well as the sculptor Matsumoto Takahiro.
Yoshimura Munehiro, a Japanese painter, perfectly illustrates the world of imagination by depicting spaces and figures between reality and surrealism. Familiar yet unfamiliar images that seem to exist in reality represent the 'in-between world' of reality and imagination. The intermediate world depicted by this mid-career artist, born in 1961, aptly demonstrates a new realm of thought that Gaston Bachelard described as a world of imagination that we need to develop.
Han Choong-seok communicates his thoughts through his unique style of depicting animals and figures. He portrays the basic defense mechanisms of life as expressions of the artist's imagination, depicted as humans and animals close to humans. The technique of coloring, which delicately spreads paint on the canvas, uniquely characterizes the artist's work, resulting from his imagination and numerous experiments.
Matsumoto Takahiro creates the existence of mythical imagination by simplifying human faces vividly carved from wood or adorning bizarre bodies reminiscent of centaurs with gold leaf. Takahiro's works, born from imagination and crafted by the artist's hands, often reveal environments or mythological content learned during our upbringing. At the same time, they allow us to experience the joy and mystery that imaginative activities bring.
Living in the present, we enjoy and benefit from the imaginative creations of others from the past. From this exhibition where the philosophies of the three artists are expressed through their unique imaginations, we hope to explore the stories and emotions that imagination brings to humans and to carry the joy of exploring new worlds and continuing the pleasure of imagination.
