요새이야기
한충석 작가는 관계에 대한 ‘방어본능’을 이야기 한다. 그는 자신의 삶 속에서 경험하며 느꼈던 감정들을 바탕으로 그림을 그려나간다. 작가는 그의 철학을 친근한 동물의 캐릭터를 통해 풀어내는데, 언뜻보기에 단순하고 귀여워 보이는 캐릭터는 어딘가 모르게 우리에게 낯선 느낌을 안겨준다. 화면 속 캐릭터들이 서로 눈치보는 모습과 흘겨보는 듯한 시선은 우리를 향해 스스로를 방어하며 ‘그 선 이상은 다가오지마’라고 경계하는 듯 보여진다.
타자의 시선으로 부터 시작된 경계의 눈초리는 세상으로 부터 스스로를 지키기 위한 방어에서, 나아가 세상을 향해 ‘너는 어떠니?’ 라는 질문을 던지는 듯 하다. 이러한 시선의 확장과 작품 특유의 친근한 동물이 주는 낯설은 느낌을 유쾌하게 풀어내는 것은 작가가 가진 예술에 대한 철학을 가장 좋은 방법으로 보여주기 위한 그의 노력임과 동시에 세상을 바라보는 작가가 가진 삶의 태도에서 비롯된 것이 아닐까.
Han is talking about the defensive nature of the relationship. He paints the emotions from his life and experience. The creator unravels his philosophy through the characters of familiar animals: those simple and cute characters somehow look something strange. The animals in the picture glare each other and read their faces, being defensive and saying “Don’t cross the border” to us.
Our wairness, formed from the gaze of the other, once is a fense to protect myself from the world, but it eventually talks to the world saying how are you. This expansion of the consciousness and the familiar but awkward animal characters in the works are a method to show the philosophy and the attitude toward the world of the creator.
