마유카 야마모토는 임신과 출산 그리고 육아의 과정 속에서 자신의 유년시절, 특히 어마나와의 관계에 대해 생각하고 이렇다할 이유를 찾을 수 없었던 유년기의 상처 또는 원초적인 두려움을 찾아내 그림으로 풀어낸다.
작가의 작품에 어김없이 등장하는 어린아이의 모습은 언제나 동물의 탈, 혹은 짐승의 신체 일부 등으로 가려져 있다. 이는 어쩌면 자라지 못한, 세상 밖으로 나오기 두려운 작가의, 그리고 우리의 모습을 동물의 뒤에 숨은 아이의 모습으로 나타내는 것일지도 모른다.
작품에 등장하는 아이에 대해 많은 이들은 작가의 아이가 아닌지에 대한 물음을 던진다. 그에 대해 마유카는 “실제로 저의 아이를 그린 적은 없습니다. 제가 그리고 있는 아이는 제 자신이 아닌가 하는 생각이 듭니다. 동물을 몸에 감싸고 있거나 함께하는 것은 불안정하고 미분화 된 상태에서 보호받고 싶고, 숨고싶고, 상처받고 싶지 않은 마음 때문입니다.” 라 말한다.
Mayuka Yamamoto explores her childhood memories, particularly her relationship with her mother, during the processes of pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. She expresses and resolves the scars or primal fears from her childhood that were difficult to understand or find reasons for through her artwork.
In the artist's works, the figure of a child invariably appears, often covered by an animal mask or a part of a beast's body. This may symbolize the artist's own hidden self, afraid to come out into the world and representing our collective fear of growing up.
Many viewers question whether the child in the artwork is the artist's own. In response, Mayuka says, "I have never actually drawn my own child. I feel that the child I am drawing is not me. Embracing or being with animals is because of the desire not to be hurt, to be protected, to breathe, and to avoid a heart that is unstable and undifferentiated."
